Value orientations in greek physical education: curricula and teachers' perceptions

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the educational value orientations in Greek Physical Education (P.E.) across two domains: a) National curricula for P.E. (formal domain) and b) P.E. teachers’ beliefs and perceptions (perceived domain). A research design involving content analysis of the curricula, structured interviews with teachers, qualitative and quantitative strategies was used in order to collect and analyse the data. Results indicated that: Disciplinary Mastery is the dominant value orientation in P.E. curricula for elementary and middle schools Inconcistencies are demonstrated between the aims and the contents in P.E. curricula In P.E. teachers’ beliefs the dominant orientation is toward a combination of sourses (learner, society, subject matter) and toward learner’s needs, interests and experiences The focus of the P.E. curricula is not compatible with the values of P.E. teachers In P.E. teachers’ views about P.E. a strong incongruence is revealed between th ...
