GRAFTING OF METHACRYLATE ESTERS ONTO WOOL-CHARACTERIZATION-PROPERTIES
Abstract
GRAFTING OF METHACRYLATE ESTERS (METHYL-BUTYL-DECYL- AND OCTADECYL-) ONTO REDUCED WOOL WAS CARRIED OUT BY USING A) K2S2O8, B) K2S2O8-LIBR REDOX SYSTEM AND C) AZO-BIS-ISOBUTYRONITRILE AS INITIATORS. PERCENTAGE GRAFTING AND PERCENT EFFICIENCY WERE FOUND TO BE DEPENDENT ON THE CONCENTRATION OF MONOMER, THE REACTION TEMPERATURE, THE REACTION TIME, THE INITIATOR, THE REACTION MEDIUM AND THE KIND OF MONOMER AND WOOL. THE LOCATION OF GRAFTED POLY (METHACRYLATE ESTERS) ON WOOL WAS DETERMINED WITH MICROGRAPHS OF THE SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPE. GRAFTED WOOL WAS DYED BY A REACTIVE AND AN ACID DYE AND HAD LARGER EXHAUSTION OF THE DYE BATH AND BETTER COLOUR FASTNESSES THAN THE UNTREATED WOOL . ALSO GRAFTED WOOL BECAME SHRINKPROOFED AND WATER REPELLENT AND REQUIRED MORE TIME TO TAKE FIRE.
