CARDIOVASCULAR MANIFESTATIONS DUE TO AUTONOMIC NEUROPATHY IN DIABETIC PATIENTS
Abstract
HEART RATE AND DIASTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE CHANGES WHICH OCCUR AFTER STANDING UP WERE STUDIED ON 132 PERSONS (46 CONTROLS AND 86 DIABETICS) AGE 35-75 YEARS OLD. THE EXAMINED PERSONS WERE ASKED TO STAND FOR 10 MINUTES, WHILE A CONTINUOUS ELECTROCARDIOGRAM WAS OBTAINED. MEAN R-R INTERVALS FOR EACH MINUTE SEPARATELY AS WELL AS THE ACCELERATION AND BRAKE INDEXES (A.I. AND B.I. CORRESPONDINGLY) WERE CALCULATED. FOLLOWING OBSERVATIONS WERE DONE: RESTING HEART RATE WAS HIGHER IN DIABETICS. ABSOLUTE VALUES OF HEART RATES WERE ALSO HIGHER IN DIABETICS UPON STANDING AS COMPARED TO NON-DIABETICS. THE RATES OF ACCELERATION AND RETARDATION OF THE CARDIAC RHYTHYM, DURING THE ABOVE TEST WERE LOWER IN DIABETICS. THE MEAN DIASTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE ROSE IN THE CONTROLS AFTER STANDING UP. CONVERSELY DIABETICS PRESENTED EITHER A SMALLER INCREASE OR EVEN A DECREASE OF THE DIASTOLIC PRESSURE. THIS PHENOMENON WAS MOSTLY OBSERVED IN DIABETICS WITH RETINOPATHY.
