This doctoral dissertation explores modern graffiti as both an artistic and pedagogical practice within the context of an audiovisual and digitally interconnected culture. Drawing on the theoretical approach of Umberto Eco, communication and the production of meaning are conceptualized as open processes of negotiation, in which the receiver emerges as an active interpreter of cultural codes. From this perspective, graffiti is examined as a form of “visual insurgency” and a practice of culture jamming, highlighting its capacity to critically intervene in dominant symbolic systems and to re-signify them, thereby attributing to it a clear pedagogical dimension. Within this framework, the dissertation investigates the ways in which graffiti can be systematically integrated into education and utilized as a pedagogical tool for audiovisual literacy, contributing to the enrichment and renewal of art education. The research focuses on New York style graffiti and its contemporary hybrid forms as street art, such as GIF-ITI and mobile projections in the field of digital graffiti, highlighting its transition from the local urban space to a globalized and digitally mediated visual environment. Through this transition, graffiti is constructed as a hybrid art form in which the concept of movement is transformed through the combination of static and moving image and bodily presence, shifting the artwork from a static trace to a temporal and narrative experience. At the same time, it is demonstrated that, through appropriate pedagogical interventions, graffiti can function as a tool for audiovisual and digital literacy, incorporating the logic of the “democratization of the medium” and expanding the possibilities of contemporary audiovisual education. Methodologically, the study adopts the spiral model of the tripartite methodology within the broader framework of a/r/tography, which integrates the identities of the artist, researcher and educator into an experiential and reflective framework for knowledge production. Overall, the dissertation approaches graffiti through the lens of the artist-educator, highlighting its role as a mediator of audiovisual literacy. In this way, graffiti is positioned at the intersection of art, technology, and pedagogy, opening new expressive, research and educational perspectives for contemporary visual culture.
