The evolution and the macroeconomic impact of the Greek tax system reforms from 1974 until today: findings, prospects and key recommendations
Abstract
The main objective of this PhD thesis is to analyze the evolution and the macroeconomic impact of the Greek tax system. Therefore, we first present the relevant literature on theories as well as empirical studies on taxation and its macroeconomic effects. More specifically, in we analyze the main empirical and theoretical studies on taxation and economic growth not only within the concept of endogenous growth models, but also within the framework of dynamic modeling and the newly developed approach of narrative methods. Also, we review the evolution of the tax system in Greece. One of the contributions of this thesis is to provide not only a legal documentation that is conducted under a thorough review of tax legislation, but also with a unique dataset, consisting of 120 laws that brought significant changes in the vast majority of categories of taxes in Greece from 1974 to 2018.
