Socio-psychological processes involved in bullying interpretation: Analyzing the construction of social networks, social hierarchy and social identities in adolescents’ discourse

Abstract

The purpose of the current study is to analyze how young adolescents construct bullying and youth violence in the context of focus groups. The theoretical background of the study discusses critically existing psychological and social-psychological approaches that consider groups that engage in conflicts as static and predefined entities (e.g., perpetrator, victim). The present analysis follows a rhetorical psychological approach to flexibly analyze social categories as mobilized in the discursive context of violence. Beyond that, ideological dilemmas of liberalism in talk on victimhood are analyzed. Emphasis is laid on the historical and cultural context informing constructions of youth violence and bullying. For the purposes of the main study, 27 focus groups were undertaken involving 125 young adolescents, aged between 12 and 15 years old.
