Theophrastus' Metaphysics and the theory of first being
Abstract
This work deals with Theophrastus’ work Metaphysics, («Τῶν Μετὰ τὰ Φυσικά», Greek) and more specifically with the notion of the first being, the first principle. The dominant form of skepticism in Theophrastus’ particular work has been of interest to contemporary research, as a great number of metaphysical issues are interestingly presented and analyzed through aporetic syllogisms.The method through which Theophrastus deals with the topics at hand, has lead contemporary research to assume that the work itself is either a mere representation of the questions it deliberates on, or a fragment of a greater work, an incomplete theory, or even a preface to a structured philosophical treatise.
