The roman Agora at Delphi

Abstract

The subject of the thesis entitled "The Roman Agora at Delphi" is the evolution of the architecture and uses of the monumental complex of the so-called "Roman Agora" of Delphi, between the Imperial period and the Late Roman and Early Byzantine periods, i.e. between the 3rd and 7th centuries A.D.The Roman Agora is the monumental complex that occupies the space in front of the southeast entrance of the sanctuary of Apollo and was discovered during the Great Excavation of Delphi (1892-1903). Although it constitutes one of the best preserved monuments of Late Antiquity in Delphi, the Roman Agora has never been the subject of a specific research in the form of a monograph.Building on the important research already carried out, the thesis aims to contribute not only to the restitution of the history of the monument, but also to the understanding of the urban evolution of the city of Delphi, especially during the Early Byzantine period. Abstract

L’objet de la thèse intitulée « L’Agora romaine de Delphes » est l'évolution de l’architecture et des usages du complexe monumental de Delphes appelé Agora romaine entre l’époque impériale et les périodes romaine tardive et protobyzantine, soit entre le IIIe et le VIIe s. apr. J.-C. L’Agora romaine est l’ensemble monumental qui occupe l’espace devant l’entrée sud-est du sanctuaire d’Apollon et qui a été mis au jour durant les travaux de la Grande Fouille de Delphes (1892-1903). Bien qu’elle constitue l’un des ensembles monumentaux les mieux conservés de Delphes, l’Agora romaine n’a jamais fait l’objet d’une recherche spécifique, sous la forme d’une monographie.
