In the 20th century, the francophone Bandes dessinées became popular all across the world thanks to the massive appeal of humorous and cartoonish titles such as Asterix, Lucky Luke and Tintin, comics that convincingly proved that a medium that gave an impression of ephemerality could achieve a lasting universality. Nevertheless, signs of transition to a new era had already begun to appear in the franco-belgian comics industry since the 60s. A new generation of artists wished to escape from the utopian visions of already established auteurs (such as René Goscinny and Hergé) and had the ambition to guide the medium of comics in a more adult direction. The themes of violence and sexuality that we examine in this dissertation are closely interconnected with this new turn, as they fundamentally changed the broader perception of BDs and quickly defined their new, expanded character. Our dissertation starts chronologically right at the start of this profound change in the industry and reaches up until the more recent developments of the 21st century. These adult oriented genre francophone comics quickly developed a strong international influence since the beginning of the 70s and contributed to the newfound prestige and maturity of the medium. Adopting a broad comparative approach we emphasize that violence in BDs is usually characterized by a more realistic and down to earth approach that usually lacks the intensely commercialized and explicitly entertaining violent character of American superhero comics and Japanese shonen manga. These two opposing schools invest in supernatural battles of heroes and warriors, in special powers, martial arts and vast, complicated worlds, unsuited to the more episodic character of BDs. This different outlook seems to have invariably led to the transformation of successful comic book titles into movies, animated shows, video games and extremely lucrative international franchises. It is precisely this philosophical difference concerning the nature of each school’s approach at entertaining and attracting the reader and BD’s traditional hesitation in artistically instrumentalizing this more commercial violence that has led to a relative weakening of their global cultural sway since the beginning of the 21st century. As far as sexuality is concerned, we detect a gradual expansion of sexual themes from the 70s onwards, a linear progression, in parallel with the overwhelming influence of the sexual revolution, which would soon even reach titles addressed to teenagers and children. In the pages of modern French comics the subject of sexuality is addressed with a characteristic directness, realism and vitality in direct contrast to the more easily perceived puritanism of most mainstream American comics and the erotic wildness of Japanese manga. In our work we also underline the genuine attempts at a broadening of the thematic and formalistic horizons of BDs during the especially competitive conditions of an increasingly globalized and virtualized 21st century. After the decline of the traditional comic anthologies, new genres arrive on the scene, most important among them being the autobiographical comics (Persepolis) and literary adaptations (Salammbo). Female perspectives on sexuality and everyday life are present far more often compared to the past, similarly with the more authentic representations of homosexual couples. This more realistic turn to the everyday and the mundane has salvaged the prestige of francophone comics with a more specialized readership, but it appears that as of yet it cannot bestow the genuinely popular universality that they exhibited in the recent past. In the first part of our work we focus on the vibrant world of adult francophone comics of the 70s and 80s, outlining their easily perceived cinematic influences and their earnest and mostly successful attempts at helping the medium reach maturity. In the second part we examine in depth the representations of sexuality in the pages of contemporary BDs, describing the evolution and broadening of sexual themes from the 90s onwards and recounting the newfound formalistic freedom of francophone comics, their focus on the everyday and their realistic sketches of a wider variety of people and perspectives. Finally, in the third part of our work we attempt a broad study of historical violence in wars and revolutions as represented in three profoundly different cultures and move on to delineate a whole tapestry of different forms of violence in comics. Throughout our work we try to contextualize our findings in a broader historical perspective and give an honest account on what our observations mean for the future of the industry and for comics as an art form.
