Social and revolutionary awareness of the armed cohorts of Roumeli during the 1821 revolution

Abstract

The object of the present thesis is to present analytically the conditions and factors that contributed in forming the social and revolutionary awareness of the armed cohorts at Roumeli during the long pre-Revolutionary period. In particular, the pre-Revolutionary and revolutionary phenomenon of Roumeli Men-at arms is studied through an analytical and methodic approach. The competition of men-at-arms and the mechanisms for the formation of its system both during the pre-Revolutionary as well as during the revolutionary periods is investigated in relation to applied and other men-at-arms networks of Roumeli. Also, the investigation expands to the role of Varnakiotis as it relates to the fact that Western Mainland takes part in the revolution with a delay of two months in contrast to the Eastern Mainland and Peloponnesus, as well as the role Mavrokordatos played in enforcing the competition of men-at-arms and the greater conflicts in the specific area.
