Ottoman reforms and Ecumenical Patriarchate: political antagonism for the implementation of the general regulations (1858 - 1878)
Abstract
The doctoral dissertation is intended to describe, analyze and interpret the formation of two opposing wings in the Greek Orthodox community of Constantinople: the clerical and the reformist, as well as the political antagonism between them which manifested itself in the period 1858 - 1878, focusing on the implementation of the constitutional text of the " general regulations" a text which emerged from the deliberations of the national assembly in the years 1858 - 1860 the analysis is conducted against the background of the second period of reforms in the Ottoman empire (tanzimat) and is based on prmary archive material and the study of relevant bibliography both Greek and foreign.
