Demetrius Cydones and his Times: a study of his life and his writings (with emphasis on his correspondence)

Abstract

This dissertation is composed based on the first comprehensive and thorough investigation and presentation of the multifaceted personality of Demetrius Cydones (1323/24-1397). Taking into consideration the difficult time Demetrius lived in, his personality is examined as it is depicted in his writings, with particular emphasis on his rescued correspondence, as well as on other well-known contemporary source material. This dissertation includes a detailed depiction of Demetrius’ life along with a well-rounded description of his activities. Thus, it covers the scientific absence of a complete monograph for this multi-talented man. It is the first time that the course of his life is completely reconstructed and his rich activity is depicted in detail, since he was a distinguished politician, intellectual and theologian, but also a man with a broad, yet mainly hostile, social environment.
