Sources of stress, burnout and coping strategies among university students

Abstract

Given the international increase in academic stress among university students the present study intended to examine which are the most prevalent sources of stress among university Greek students during their studies, the style of coping strategies they use to overcome these stressors and the potential levels of academic burnout. In addition, the present study tried to examine the correlation between stress, coping strategies, burnout and variables such as gender, school, year of study and academic performance. 2.008 university students from different Schools and Greek Universities participated in the study. The Students Stress Survey (SSS) questionnaire, the Maslach Burnout Inventory Student Survey (MBI – SS) and the Student Coping Instrument (SCOPE) were used for data collection. 40 items including potential Personal, Academic and Environmental sources of stress were examined.
