Pipe (church) organs in Greece
Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to present the pipe organs that used to be in Greece and those that still exist in the Greek dominion. Before the registration and presentation of the various facts and descriptions of the these pipe organs, there is an introductory chapter referring briefly to their historic course in Greece, starting from Ktisivius’ “Hydraulis” in the 3rd century B.C. to the present day. There is reference to the pipe organs that used to exist in Crete during the Venetian Occupation (1204-1669) and then to the two Byzantine pipe organs, the Ioakimio organ and the Evion Panarmonion made for the teaching of the Byzantine chant in the recent years.Following, details are given for the 18 pipe organs that are in Catholic and Protestant Churches and in The Music Hall of Athens, as well as for the 8 small organs (Portative, Positive) which belong mainly to individuals.
