Greek donors-collectors of art in the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century: the cases of Georgios Averoff, Alexandros Soutsos and Antonis Benakis
Abstract
The subject of the dissertation is a special aspect of the cultural life and activity of part of the ruling class in Greece, which is summarized in the relation of certain donations / bequests of artistic and wider cultural collections in Greece to the collectors' identity and the ethnographic process. The donor / legacies to the Greek nation-state of three private cultural collections include: Georgios Averoff (1818-1899), Alexandros Soutsos (1839-1895) and Antonis Benakis (1873-1954), who during a century, almost from the second half of the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, introduce in the academic field the subject that has been described in historiography as "benevoleism" and concerns the benefactors.
