The art exchibitions: the artists and their public in Athens at 19th century

Abstract

The main purpose of this thesis is to present and organize a complete picture of the greek art of the 19 th century. Primary aim, during the study, was the evaluation of the primary sources mined from archieves and also the everyday and periodical press of the time. After completing that, i'm trying to reconstruct the image of the art exhibitions held in Athens at 19th century. The thesis includes four chapters: at the first i examine the tendencies, the circumstances and the level of education of the Artistic Section of Polytechnic School of Athens. At the second i present the artistic sections of the general exhibitions called "Olympia" and in the third and fourth chapter the efforts from collectors and art lovers to orginize artistic exhibitions. I also examine problems such as conception for the artistic creation, the attitude of the public towards art, the appearence of art critic, the need of creativity, circulation and acception of the art work with general ideological research ...
