The scholia of Leo Magentinus on book II of prior analytics: critical edition

Abstract

This thesis aims at elucidating an extensively neglected part of the Aristotelian corpus, i.e. the Byzantine commentaries on the Organon. More specifically, the dissertation is concerned with the critical edition of Leo Magentinus' (12th cent.?) scholia on the Prior Analytics II and it consists of three parts: (a) Introduction, (b) critical edition of the scholia and (c) five Appendices. The first chapter of the Introduction gives an account of the research results regarding the work of Leo. The second chapter discusses some aspects of the extant information on the intellectual activity of the Byzantine scholar. The third chapter focusses on the structure of Aristotle's Prior Analytics II and its implications for the relevant greek commentaries. The fourth chapter is concerned with the literary form, the content and the sources of the scholia written by Magentinus.
