Between tragedy and rhetoric: The autograph P.Köln VI 245, a papyrus on Odysseus’ ptocheia at Troy”.Through the present dissertation I attempt to offer a new hermeneutical reading of the autograph P.Köln VI 245, a partly saved literary papyrus probably coming from the wider region of Thebais, in Upper Egypt, and dated to the 3rd century AD. The writer of the text deals with a traditional mythological theme, Odysseus’ ptocheia, the hero’s disguise as a beggar, as part of his mission to steal the Palladion, the statue of Athena, from the sanctuary of the goddess at Troy. Intratextual elements allow us to suppose with enough certainty that the text, a poem written in iambic trimeters, belongs to the tragic genre. The papyrologist Maryline G. Parca was the first who studied the text and to whom we owe the editio princeps and a subsequent commentary in the form of a monograph as well. While she focuses on the editing of the fragment, her approach lacks in detailed exploring of the cultural, literary, and social environment from which the text has emerged. My aim is to show and underline the value of the autograph as conclusive evidence of the continuous presence of drama, whether as a literary genre intended for reading and recitation or as a theatrical act, during the imperial period in Egypt. In this perspective, my study contributes to the research of the importance of theatre not only as a means of entertainment but also as a factor of cultural and social convergence between several cultures and nations. My approach is text-centred and essentially based on literary and other sources. A sufficient amount of parallel texts are exploited in order to examine the intertextual relationship of the fragmentary papyrus P.Köln VI 245 with the literary production in a range between the archaic period to the first post-Christian centuries (or even later). Papyrological sources and inscriptional evidence along with the grammatological elements are examined, in order to determine the literary identity and the usage of the adespotum. Reliable electronic sources and databases, papyrological collections and epigraphical editions, as well as relevant monographs, proved to be really helpful. The thesis consists of eight parts including an introduction, five main chapters, general conclusions and bibliography. The introduction has a programmatic character focusing on the special scientific interest of P.Köln VI 245 as an autograph contributing to the discussion of the presence of the tragic poetry during the imperial period, which is the starting-point of the whole approach. In the main chapters of the study, issues such as the literary, artistic, cultural and social elements reflected in the lines of the papyrus are now clearly determined and thoroughly examined. Such issues are the literary backround that favoured the writing of texts similar to the partly saved adespotum which is the subject of my research, the evolution of tragic poetry during the imperial times, the development and influence of the Second Sophistic, the Greek paideia in Egypt, in relation to the literary “School of Thebais” (3rd century AD), the main representatives and descendants of the latter, along with their literary production and literary ancestors. An enriched palaeografical description of the text is given followed by examining matters of dating and codicological characteristics of the papyrus compared to numerous extant papyri of the period. The translation of the text is followed by a detailed presentation of the mythological tradition of the theft of the Palladion and Odysseus’ ptocheia. Special emphasis is given in the information derived from epic and dramatic intertexts in order to determine the relation or the originality of the version offered by the fragmentary papyrus to them. Another important aspect of my examination is tracing the identity of the text as far as the literary genre to which it belongs is concerned. By examining its relation to three main areas, tragedy, mime, and rhetorical exercise (ethopoiia), in terms of form and content, its compatibility to each of them is thoroughly discussed. Next chapter offers a detailed reference to the special motifs which are found in P.Köln VI 245, such as the divine epiphany, the hymn to Athena and its structure, the syncretistic elements with which Athena is depicted as a result of her assimilation to the Egyptian religion. The final chapter deals with the performative environment of the imperial period, and the circumstances under which the text was developed, through the examination of literary, papyrological and archaeological evidence.
