THE CHURCH OF CYPRUS DURING THE FIRST TWO CENTURIES OF THE OTTOMAN OCCUPATION (1571-1767)
Abstract
THE THESIS REFERS TO THE HISTORICAL CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH THE CHURCH OF CYPRUSWAS CALLED TO SERVE THE PEOPLE OF GOD SINCE ITS OCCUPATION UNDER OTTOMANS. THE CHURCH DID NOT ACCEPT LATIN WAYS OF THOUGHT AND LIFE. THE PROBLEM CONCERN THE ECCLESIASTICAL LEAD CLASS. CONVERSIONS TO MUSLIMS WERE OBSERVED AT LEAST UP TO 1832. THE SPIRITUAL PEOPLE WHO STUDIED IN WESTERN EUROPE FALSIFIED THE CONTENTS OF ORTHODOX TEACHING. THE CHURCH LOOKED AFTER AND SERVED PEOPLE. IT ALSO UNITED PEOPLE AND FAUGHT FOR THEM.
