The Asclepieion in the sanctuary of Hippolytos at Troizen: Hippolytos and his connection with Asclepios and other heroes healers

Abstract

In this study an analytical mention of the data about Hippolytos and his sanctuary at Troizen, where an Asclepieion - therapeutic centre was in function, is attempted. This Thesis seeks exactly to shed light on the function of this particular sanctuary as an infirmary and as an important cult place in honour of the local hero, Hippolytos, through a combinative examination of the architectural relics, the philological sources, the texts of inscriptions and the available data concerning the mobile findings from the site. The synthesis of all these elements is attempted here for the first time.In order to obtain a better documentation of the architectural remains of the Hippolyteion, new measurements were made by the writer, face plans of the long walls of the "hestiatorion" as well as axonometric plans of specific elements were drawn and the ground plan, published by the last excavator of the site, Welter, was supplemented.
