STUDY OF THE TRANSPORT MECHANISM OF ORGANIC LIQUIDS THROUGH GLASSY POLYMERIC MEMBRANES BY VARIOUS OPTICAL METHODS

Abstract

THIS WORK IS CONCERNED WITH THE STUDY OF THE TRANSPORT MECHANISM OF LIQUID SOLVENTS OR SWELLING AGENTS IN CELLULOSE ACETATE MEMBRANES CHARACTERISED BY DEGREEOF ACETYLATION CORRESPONDING TO TWO ACETYL GROUPS PER GLUCOSE UNIT, AND ESPECIALLY WITH THE INFLUENCE OF THE DIFFERENTIAL SWELLING STRESSES WHICH ARE GENERATED DURING PENETRATION, DUE TO THE UNEVEN DISTRIBUTION OF THE PENETRANT CONCENTRATION IN THE POLYMER. THE LIQUID PENETRANTS WERE METHANOL (MA), METHYLENE CHLORIDE (MC), WATER (W), ACETONE (AC) AND 1,4 DIOXANE (DX). PENETRATION KINETICS WERE DETERMINED IN NON ORIENTED AND IN UNIAXIALLY ORIENTED (UNIAXIALLY STRETCHED) MEMBRANES, IN DIRECTIONS PARALLEL AND PERPENDICULAR TO THE MACROMOLECULAR ORIENTATION AXIS BY MICROSCOPY, AND WERE COMBINED WITH MEASUREMENTS OF THE CORRESPONDING BIREFRINGENCE AND REFRACTIVE INDEX PROFILES OF THE SWELLING POLYMER.
