STUDY AND CHARACTERIZATION OF THE REDUCED PRODUCTS HALOGENS RHENIUM CLUSTERS
Abstract
THE BINUCLEAR MULTIPLY BONDED COMPLEXES [RE2(Μ-X)3X6]- AND ERE2(Μ-X)3X6]2- UNDERGO HOMOGENEOUSLY A TWO AND ONE ELECTRON REDUCTION RESPECTIVELY BY. THE LOW VALENCE CR2+ AND V2+ IONS PRODUCING THE COMPOUND [RE2X8]2-. ALSO, THE TRIANGULOCLUSTER [RE3(Μ-CL)3XG]3- CAN EASILY BE REDUCED BOTH ELECTROCHEMICALLY AND CHEMICALLY. COMPLETE CHARACTERISATION OF THE SINGLY REDUCED PRODUCT HAS NOT BEEN POSSIBLE AND WHEN [CO(EN)3]3+ HAS BEEN EMPLOYED AS COUNTER ION, OXIDATION TO THE PARENT SPECIES OCCURS PRODUCING THE COMPLEXES [CO(EN)3][RE3(Μ-CL)3CL3] AND [CO(EN)3] [RE3(Μ-CL)3BRG(H2O)]BR, (1). SUCCESSFUL CHARACTERISATION OF THEREDUCED SPECIES HAS BEEN ACHIEVED IN THE FORM OF ITS CAPPED SULFATO DERIVATIVE (S3[RE3CL3SO4) (2). OXIDATION OF THE PRODUCT "[RE3(Μ-CL)3X(G-X)(H2O)X](4-X)- WITH MOLECULAR OXYGEN, IN AQUEOUS HYDROHALIC ACIDS, GIVES THE PARENT TRIAGULO COMPLEX, WHEREAS IN ORGANIC SOLVENTS (THF) THE HEXANUCLEAR COMPOUND ((PH4P)(RE3(Μ-CL)3BR6(H2O)O*3THF))2 (3).
