GEOGRAPHIC STRUCTURE OF THE GENETIC DIFFERENTIATION IN ALBINARIA POPULATIONS FROM THE AEGEAN ARCHIPELAGO REGION
Abstract
IN THIS THESIS WE HAVE DESCRIBED THE GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF GENETIC FEATURES IN NATURAL POPULATIONS OF THE SPECIES OF THE LAND MOLLUSC BELONGING TO THEGENUS ALBINARIA IN THE AEGEAN ARCHIPELAGO REGION. THIRTY ONE POPULATIONS BELONGING TO 15 DIFFERENT SPECIES OF THE GENUS WERE STUDIED FOR 27 ELECTROPHORETICALLY DETECTED GENETIC MARKERS. IT WAS FOUND THAT GENOTYPE FREQUENCIES DEPARTED FROM PANMIXIA IN THE DIRECTION OF AN INCREASED FREQUENCY OF HOMOZYGOTES. THE MEAN INBREEDING COEFFICIENT IS EQUAL TO 0.200, BUT THERE IS HETEROGENITY FOR IT AMONG POPULATIONS. THE EFFECTIVE NUMBER OF ALLELES, A MEASURE OF GENETIC POLYMORPHISM, DECLINED FROM SOUTHERN TO NORTHERN POPULATIONS. THE GENETIC DISTANCES BETWEEN POPULATIONS WERE ESTIMATED AND TREES WERE CONSTRUCTED. THE BESTTREE IS CONSTRUCTED WHEN THE GENETIC DISTANCE D2 IS USED AND BY THE NEIGHBORJOINING METHOD. THIS TREE IS IN GOOD AGREEMENT WITH GEOGRAPHY AND THE CLASSICAL TAXONOMY OF THE GENUS.
