The basin of Ioannina and the wider area of Molossia in Central Epirus: archaeological remains, settlement patterns and economy

Abstract

The aim of this dissertation is to present and interpret the archaeological material from the basin of Ioannina and to incorporate it in the archaeological context of the wider area of Molossia, in central Epirus. The work seeks to fulfill a recomposition of topography, settlement organization and economy in the strictly determined region of Ioannina basin, through the study of the unpublished archaeological material and the simultaneous evaluation of the already published data. Settlement pattern and organization, road network, productive activities, pottery and cultural contact, are some of the subjects examined here. Conclusions concerning the region of Ioannina basin is attempted to be connected with the historical topography of the wider area of Molossia. Based at that, the study includes a critical review and interpretation οf the numerous citadels and an attempt to determine the geographical limits of Molossia.
