Social economy, work integration and social exclusion: the experience of social cooperatives in Greece
Abstract
The objective of this thesis is twofold: the contribution to the theoretical consolidation of the third sector debate and the empirical investigation of a specific family of organizations within it, Work Integration Social Enterprises (W.I.S.E.) in Greece. In the first part, a critical survey of all related concepts is undertaken, such as non-profit sector, social and solidarity economy. Social enterprises illustrate the inherent ambivalence of social economy organizations, as entities which on one hand intensify public sector retrenchment and on the other hand promote the progressive transformation of dominant policies. Adopting the European approaches for the social economy, we examine social enterprises with regard to their goals, their stakeholders and finally their resources as a mix of three different sources and operating principles: market transactions, public (re-)distribution and community reciprocity.
