Spectroscopic study of tissues and biomaterials

Abstract

The aim of this work was the study of atheromatic plaques of coronary and carotid arteries, at a molecular level, using FT-IR spectroscopy and SEM analysis with EDAX equipment in order to answer some of the questions about the mechanism of atherogenesis leading to better treatment of the disease. From the FT-IR spectra it was suggested that the initial steps of atheromatic plaque formation depends on hyperoxidation of lipids, phospholipids and proteins of membranes. From the shift of several bands to lower frequencies in the region of 1800-1500 cm-1 it was suggested that the protein helices change their structure from a-helix to random coil depending on the clinical history of the patients. The band at 3080 cm-1 is assigned to the terminal olefinic group (=CH). The intensity of this olefinic bond was strongly associated with the LDL cholesterol in the serum of the patients and with the band at 1735 cm-1 could be used as marker for LDL cholesterol.
