Classics illustrated and the historical novel for children: Myth and reality

Abstract

In this thesis we aim to examine how classical historical novels are presented on comics in the series of Classics Illustrated (USA, 1941-1971) and their Greek adaptations (“Κλασσικά Εικονογραφημένα”, 1951-1970). Our goal is to demonstrate the revolutionary idea of adapting classical works to comics, as well as present the series’ history. The adaptations are examined in comparison to the corresponding original historical novels (Ivanhoe, The last of the Mohicans, Les Miserables, and the Three Musketeers) and under the prism of intertextuality. The series of Classics Illustrated seems to have successfully offered a different view in each novel, as a new text, based on the original.
