Gender, psychological distress and the counselling process: An interpretative phenomenological analysis of women's experience of the therapeutic relationship

Abstract

The present doctoral thesis explores the female clients’ experience of gender in the therapeutic relationship and process. The central research questions include the causal role of gender in entering therapy, the way that it is discussed during the counselling process, the impact of gender in the therapeutic relationship and the gendered realities of the clients. The sample consists of 27 counselling and psychotherapy female clients drawn from both counselling services and private practice. 17 of them work with a female counsellor and 10 work with a male counsellor. The data are approached qualitatively with the use of semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions. The results were analysed with the use of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA).
