Το οξειδωτικό stress ορίζεται ως η διαταραχή της ισορροπίας μεταξύ των προ-οξειδωτικών και των αντιοξειδωτικών παραγόντων. Σε ασθενείς με Χρόνια Νεφρική Νόσο (ΧΝΝ) η ισορροπία αυτή διαταράσσεται οδηγώντας σε κατάσταση αυξημένου οξειδωτικού stress. Oxidative stress defines an imbalance between excessive generation of oxidant compounds and insufficient antioxidant defense mechanisms. In Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients the balance between pro-oxidants and anti-oxidant capacity is shifted towards increased oxidative stress. Moreover, chronic inflammation is a major characteristic of CKD and many investigators suggest that there is a correlation between oxidative stress and inflammation. The primary aim of this study was to determine the oxidative stress and inflammatory indices as well as the correlations between them not only in end-stage CKD patients, but in 3rd and 4th stage CKD, as there are a few controlled studies for this group of patients. In addition, we studied the effect of vitamin E as anti-oxidant compound in end-stage CKD patients undergoing hemodialysis using vitamin E coated cellulose dialysis membranes.
