This thesis studies the effect of vegetation on flow and turbulence characteristics in open channel flows. Specific cases were also studied such as cases with presence of a vegetation patch and three dimensional, fully developed cases where the channel width is partially vegetated. For such cases a detailed analysis of the effect of various vegetation characteristics, such as the submergence ratio, the plant density and the vegetation arrangement is demonstrated and finally the effect of vegetation to the discharge capacity of the channels is investigated. Based on this research an evaluation of turbulence models, of the k-ε and RSM type, is carried out and several modifications are proposed in order to increase their validity. The main criteria for the evaluation of the models is the capability for the computation of velocity distribution and turbulence characteristics (turbulent kinetic energy, dissipation of turbulence and Reynolds stresses) distributions in the vegetation region, the interface and the free flow region. For the numerical simulations the CFD code FLUENT has been used, which is based on the Finite Volume method. The solution of such flows demands the application of both spatial and time averaging and this procedure is called double averaging method. For open channel flows with vegetation, the time-spatial average methodology is used and for the additional terms, in the momentum equations and the transport equations of the turbulence models, is required modelling for the “closure” of the equations. The numerical simulations are based on laboratory experiments which have been performed by various researchers. In particular, experimental measurements from Dunn et al. (1996), Poggi et al. (2004) and Huthoff and Augustijn (2006) have been used for the evaluation of turbulence models. For the study of the vegetation patch experimental data from the work of Bouma et al. (2007) have been used, while in order to study the effect of vegetation partially distributed in the channel, results from White and Nepf (2007) have been applied. The evaluation of the validity Boussinesq hypothesis demonstrated that, at the interface region between vegetation and free flow, the additional terms resulting from the double-averaging are important and for that reason modeling is required. The comparison of the computed results with available experimental data and semi-empirical relationships is satisfactory and the modifications of the turbulence models which have been used in the numerical simulations are acceptable. It is also shown that the patch length and the vegetation density of the patch are important for the development of flow and turbulence characteristics, since the increase of vegetation density and patch length result to the acceleration of flow development inside the patch, while increase length downstream of the patch is required in order the effect of the patch to be considered negligible. The presence of the vegetation causes the reduction of the discharge capacity of the channels. It is also found that the discharge capacity of the channels is affected by the location of vegetation inside the channel.
