IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE ACCURACY LEVEL OF A SINGLE IMAGE CLASSIFICATION, POTENTIAL USE CAN BE MADE OF ADDITIONAL INFORMATION WHICH RELATES TO THE SPATIAL CONTEXT OF THE CLASSIFIED PIXEL. TWO METHODS HAVE BEEN TRIED OUT FOR HANDLING THE PROBLEM OF MULTI-SOURCE DATA CLASSIFICATION. ONE IS BASED UPON THE PRINCIPLES OFTHE SUPERVISED RELAXATION TECHNIQUE AND ACCOUNTS THE LABEL CONSISTENCY IN THE HEIGHBOURHOOD OF THE PIXEL. THE SECOND METHOD MAKES USE OF THE THEORY OF EVIDENCE OF DEMPSTER -SHAFER, REGARDED AS THE REASONIN THE APPLICATION OF THE TWO METHODS IN A POST CLASSIFICATION LEVEL PROCESS RESULTED IN IMPROVED CLASSIFICATIONS. FUTURE EXPANSION OF THE STUDY WILL BE THE INTEGRATION WITHIN THE KNOWLEDGE BASE OF THE EXPERT SYSTEM OF RULES THAT RELATE TO VARIOUS GEOGRAPHICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AREA AND THE SPECTRAL CHARACTERISTICS OF CROP TYPES. THE AIM IS TO ACHIEVE A FLEXIBLE IMAGE CLASSIFICATION METHODOLOGY FOR ADAPTATION TO OPERATIONAL PROGRAMMES OF THE EUROPEAN COMMUNITY.
