THE OBJECTIVE OF THE THESIS IS TO PROVIDE A MANY-SIDED, THEORETICALLY AND EXPERIMENTALLY SUPPORTED STUDY OF VENTILATION, FROM THE VIEW POINT OF THE ARCHITECTURAL ART AND SCIENCE. MORE SPECIFICALLY IT INCLUDES: - DESCRIPTION OF THE VENTILATION PROPERTIES AND PRESENTATION OF TOPICS RELATED TO ITS CONTRIBUTION IN ENERGY BALANCE OF BUILDINGS. - ANALYSIS OF THE NATURAL MECHANISMS (WIND, STACK EFFECT) RELEVANT TO VENTILATION PROCESSES . - DESIGN PROPOSALS FOR THE OPTIMIZATIONOF THE VENTILATION SYSTEMS IN BUILDINGS. - A THEORETICAL MODEL OF NATURAL VENTILATION, WHICH WAS CREATED IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS OF THEPHENOMENON; SUITABLE TO BE USED AS A TOOL DURING THE ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN. - FINALLY, IT INCLUDES SOME VENTILATION MEASUREMENTS THE RESULTS OF WHICH ARE COMPARED WITH THE OUTPUTS OF THE PROPOSED MODEL, IN ORDER TO TEST ITS APPLICABILITYAND TO MAKE A FIRST STEP IN ITS VALIDATION.
