High energy photoproduction of ΛC charmed baryon at CERN SPS accelerator

Abstract

The last three periods of running of the NS14/2 charm photoproduction experiment about 4.5 million events have been collected. These events, when analyzed with the inclusion of information given by the second Cerenkov, have an extended range of particle identification in the low momentum range. The properties and production characteristics of Λc charmed baryons found from these last selected events have been investigated. A brief theoretical introduction describes the charm physics and the photoproduction models. The production of the final high energy photon beam <Εγ> ≈100 GeV, the configuration and make up of apparatus and detectors are described. The technical properties and difficulties of apparatus and detectors have been discussed. The data analysis has been focused on the second Cerenkov counter, designed and constructed by the National Technical University of Athens, so a particular emphasis has been placed on the description of this counter.
