PRECIPITATION OF CALCIUM CARBONATE IN AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS
Abstract
THE PRECIPITATION OF CALCIUM CARBONATE FROM AQEOUS SOLUTIONS HAS BEEN STUDIED AT SUPERSATURATIONS SUFFICIENT FOR SPONTANEOUS PRECIPITATION, BUT LOW ENOUGH TO ENABLE HIGHLY REPRODUCIBLE EXPERIMENTS TO BE CARRIED OUT WITH RESPECT TO INDUCTION PERIODS AND RATES OF PRECIPITATION. THE STABILITY OF CALCIUM CARBONATE SUPERSATURATED SOLUTIONS WAS STUDIED FOR TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 25 AND 80 C AND PH 800-900. IN ALL CASES THE INDUCTION PERIODS AND INITIAL RATES OF PRECIPITATION ARE BOTH STRONGLY DEPENDENT ON SUPERSATURATION. THE INVESTIGATION OF THE PRECIPITATION PROCESS TOOK PLACE BY TWO DIFFERENT EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES: A) PH-STAT METHOD AND B) A PLETHOSTATIC EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH. BY MAINTAINING THE INITIAL SOLUTION CONDITIONS WHILE FOLLOWING THE PRECIPITATION PROCESS, WE WERE ABLE TO CONFIRM THAT THE SOLID PHASE FORMING WAS VATERITE, RAPIDLY CONVERTING TO CALCITE. KINETIC ANALYSIS OF THE INITIAL RATES SHOWED MARKED DEPENDENCE OF THE RATE OFVATERITE FORMATION ON THE SOLUTION SUPERSATURATION.
