In the present study, an extended measurements campaign was performed in Ioannina, a medium sized Southeastern European city of Greece, in order to investigate the parameters that comprise ambient air levels of benzene, personal exposure to some characteristic population groups (policemen, gasoline station employees and taxi drivers) in comparison to the general population and finally to estimate the related risk. The campaign included ambient air monitoring and personal exposure measurements with both passive and active sampling in several microenvironments, as well as meteorological and traffic data. The results indicated that ambient benzene concentrations vary from 21 to 6 μg/m3, presenting an average value of 9.2 μg/m3. Benzene concentrations are highly depended on specific circumstances like traffic congestion, street canyons, and calm wind conditions. The importance of these parameters was further evaluated by measurements and applied modeling techniques, involving a deterministic and an artificial neural network model (Karakitsios et al., 2006). Furthermore, the effect of gasoline stations to the observed benzene concentrations in the vicinity close to them was also investigated and it was found that the operation of the stations add to the already existing concentrations 3-5 μg/m3 at a distance of 50-100 m from the fuel pumps, depending on the amount of fuel traded and the prevailing meteorological conditions (Karakitsios et al., 2007a). Personal exposure values for the general population ranged from 19.7 to 4.3 μg/m3, indicating an average value of 8.9 μg/m3. The importance of the parameters that control exposure levels to general population were accessed through statistical analysis of detailed daily activity-time diaries and active sampling measurements. Indoor exposure to benzene is in general lower to outdoor, testifying that traffic is the dominant source of benzene emissions in the wider area, sub served by ETS in indoor environments. A regression model for population exposure based on active sampling results was applied on passive sampling with very good agreement. The occupational groups of policemen and taxi drivers are exposed to benzene during the work shift 2 to 3 times more than the general population. Gasoline station employees’ exposure to benzene was further investigated and it was determined to have an average value of 29 μg/m3, often exceeding 50 μg/m3. In order to investigate the effect of the parameters that constitute the amount of exposure, active sampling measurements were also performed, in combination with several other environmental parameters. Two modeling techniques were developed, a regression one and an artificial neural network technique. Both models performed adequately, indicating that the amount of fuel traded and ambient temperature are the dominant parameters controlling exposure (Karakitsios et al., 2007b). 4 Due to the fact that measured benzene concentrations and the related exposure levels do not constitute a danger for acute effects, the main concern is related to the possibility of leukemia incidences in the studied population. The estimated risk due to benzene exposure of general population in the area under study was calculated considering the exposure to benzene values obtained by the measurement campaign, the related concentrations of benzene toxic metabolites on target issue (bone marrow) through the developed PBPK/PD model and the related dose-response curve, considering also the diversity of the population through a Monte Carlo-Markov Chain approach. Risk evaluation due to benzene exposure indicating that non smoking population runs a risk equal to 4.1?10-5, which increases up to 2 times under specific activity-patterns, compared to 13.1?10-5 for smokers. The estimated life time risk for the occupational groups was increased to a factor 10%.
