Abstract
The aim of this doctoral thesis is to study the evolution of economic inequalities and thus of convergence or divergence trends in the regions of the European Union, during the period 1995-2005. More specifically, the convergence or divergence trends are examined not only among the regions of the European Union, but also inside the regions. For the analysis of trends among the regions, a theoretical and empirical framework analysis is used, which was recently developed by Barro and Sala-i-Martin (1992, 1995). For the analysis of trends inside the regions, a theoretical and empirical framework analysis is used, which was originally developed by Kuznets (1955) for the study of social inequalities and was later extended by Williamson (1965) for regional inequalities.
