THERMAL PERFORMANCE AND OPTIMUM DIMENSIONS OF RADIAL (CIRCULAR) FINS WITH HEAT GENERATION
Abstract
IN THIS PH.D THESIS A METHOD IS PRESENTED FOR OBTAINING THE OPTIMUM DIMENSIONS OF RADIAL (CIRCULAR) FINS HAVING A GIVEN PROFILE, FROM QUANTITIES WHICH ARE SPECIFIED BY THE PROBLEM, NAMELY THE DESIRED HEAT DISSIPATION Q, OR VOLUME (V) OF FIN, THE THERMAL PARAMETERS H,K,ΘΒ AND THE HEAT GENERATION (9G). THE RESULTS ARE GENERALIZED BY EXPRESSING THE DIMENSIONLESS BASE THICKNESS AND WIDTH OF THE FIN WHICH ARE DEFINED IN THE TEXT OF THIS THESIS, AS FUNCTIONS OF A SINGLE DIMENSIONLESS VARIABLE DETERMINED FROM THE ABOVE QUANTITIES. WE ASSUME CONSTANT THERMAL PARAMETERS AND UNIFORM HEAT GENERATION, ALTHOUGH THE METHOD IS READILY EXTENDED TO PROBLEMS WITH SPECIFIED VARIABLE HEAT GENERATION, HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENT AND THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY. FOR PRACTICAL PROBLEMS WE EXAMINE THE CASES OF A) UNIFORM GENERATION DENSITY AND B) CONSTANT TOTAL HEAT GENERATION IN THE FIN.
