STUDY OF THE CHARACTERIZATION AND TREATMENT OF INDUSTRIAL SOLID WASTES FROM THEAREA OF THESSALONIKI FOR SAFE LAND DISPOSAL
Abstract
EIGHT SOLID WASTES, FROM THE INDUSTRIES, FROM THE AREA OF THESSALONIKI ARE EXAMINED, IN ORDER TO DETERMINE WHETHER THE WASTES PRODUCE POLLUTING LEACHATES WHENLANDFILLED OF THE WASTES WAS MANAGED BY APPLICATION OF THE US-EPA EXTRACTIVE PROCEDURE OF TOXICITY. ONE OF THE WASTES WAS CLASSIFIED AS TOXIC, AS HAZARDOUS, ONE AS POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS AND THE REST WERE CLASSIFIED AS WASTES WITH SPECIAL CAVE. LEACHING TEST WAS CARRIED OUT, IN BATCH AND COLUMN CONDITIONS. THE LEACHATE WAS DE-IONISED WATER OR SEVERAL AQUATIC SOLUTIONS SUCH AS: HCL, NAOH, H3PO4, EDTA O OIM OR HUMIC ACID 50MG/L. THE LEACHING TEST SHOWED THAT THE MAIN PROBLEM WAS THE HIGH CONCENDRACTION OF ARSENIC WHICH WAS DETERMINED IN THE LEACHATES OF TWO WASTES AND ALSO THE HIGH CONCENTRATION OF CADMIUM WHICH WAS DETERMINEDIN THE LEACHATES. THE WASTES STABILIZED WITH CEMENT 25%, AND THE ATTENATION OFAS IN THE LEACHATES WAS ABOUT 80-85% CADMIUM WAS FIXED IN THE OTHER WASTE BY MIXING THE WASTE WITH OXIME IN SEVERAL PROPORTION.
