The results of blood cultures in a general hospital in a 12 month time: clinical and labatorial evaluation

Abstract

THE AIM OF THIS INVESTIGATION WAS THE CLINICAL AND LABORATORY ASSESSMENT OF BACTERAEMIAS WHICH OCCURED DURING A 12-MONTH PERIOD AT THE "LAIKON HOSPITAL AND THE CONCLUSIONS DRAWN. THE DATA OF 166 CASES OF FRANK BACTERAEMIA WHICH CONCERNED154 PATIENTS AND 170 DIFFERENT MICROBIAL STRAINS ARE ANALYSED. A SENSITIVITY DETERMINATION OF THE ANTIBIOTICS WITH THE KIRBY BANER, MIC, MBS METHODS WAS DONE. CONTROL OF SYNERGY AND ANTAGONISM FOR 50 (-) SEROLOGICAL DETERMINATIONS OF THE RESISTANT STRAINS OF P. AERUGINOSA, WITH THE 17 ANTISERA SYSTEM AGAINST SOMATIC O ANTIGEN, WAS ALSO CARRIED OUT. A STUDY OF CROSS RESISTANCE, THE CLINICAL PICTURE OF THE PATIENTS IN RELATION TO THE MICROBES AND THE SUBJECTIVE DISEASE, THE PORTAL OF ENTRY AND THE EV-BASE OF THE DISEASE WERE ALSO STUDIED. OFTHE 170 STRAINS, 190 (64,1%) WERE GRAM (-), 51 (30%) WERE GRAM (+) AND THERE WERE 10 FUNGI (5.88%). IN 9 CASES (5.59%) THE MICROBIAL DISEASE WAS POLYMICROBIAL, THE E. COLI RATING FIRST (20%), S.
