A STUDY ON STRUCTURE AND CHEMISTRY OF LOW RANK GREEK COAL
Abstract
LITERATURE ON THE CHEMISTRY OF LOW-TEMPERATURE OXIDATION PRESENTS A CONFUSING ARRAY OF THEORIES ON THE OXIDIZED STRUCTURES OF COAL AND ON THE MECHANISMS BY WHICH OXIDATION OCCURS. MOST OF THE THEORIES PRESENTED ARE PROBABLY VALID FOR THECOAL SAMPLES AND THE OXIDIZING CONDITIONS INVOLVED IN THE RESPECTIVE TESTS, BUT THE COMPOSITE OF THESE THEORIES DOES NOT YIELD A WORKABLE MODEL FOR PREDICTING THE BEHAVIOR OF A LOW RANK COAL. THIS STUDY PROVIDES INFORMATIONS ABOUT CHEMICAL CHANGES DURING LOW TEMPERATURE OXIDATION OF GREEK LIGNITES. WE ALSO STUDIEDTHE FATE OF METAL IONS DURING SOLVENT EXTRACTION. GREAT INTEREST HAS THE FATE OF PYRIT (FES2) WHICH WE STUDIED BY MOSSBAUER SPECTROSCOPY.
