LIGHT INTO ARCHITECTURE: EVOCATIVE ASPECTS OF NATURAL LIGHT AS RELATED TO LITURGY IN BYZANTINE CHURCHES
Abstract
THE OBJECT OF THE DISSERTATION CONSISTS IN THE EXAMINATION OF THE MYSTERIOUS ATMOSPHERE OF THE INTERIOR SPACE OF THE BYZANTINE CHURCH. IT MAINTAINS THAT THEPIOUS FEELING THAT INSPIRES IN THE VISITOR IS THE RESULT OF THE CAREFUL METHOD OF INTRODUCTION OF NATURAL LIGHT IN THE INTERIOR SPACE OF THE BUILDING. THE FUNDAMENTAL HYPOTHESIS OF THE DISSERTATION IS THAT BYZANTINE RELIGIOUS ARCHITECTURE MADE CONSCIOUS AND SYSTEMATIC USE OF NATURAL LIGHT FOR THE ENHANCEMENTOF AN IMPRESSION OF THE DIVINE SO THAT THE LITURGICAL ACT COULD BE PERCEIVEDNOT THROUGH THE SPOKEN WORD ALONE BUT THROUGH THE SENSES AS WELL. NATURAL LIGHT SERVED AS A VEHICLE TOWARD A CONCEPTION OF THE "TRUE" LIGHT OF THE DIVINE NATURE. IN ORDER TO SUPPORT THIS HYPOTHESIS CERTAIN PHENOMENA WERE STUDIED WHICH WERE OBSERVED TO OCCUR REPEATEDLY.
