Correlation of maternal haematological indices and intrauterine fetal hypoxia during pregnancy and labour

Abstract

The present study was designed therefore to assess whether a relation exists between maternal haematocrit levels and fetal acid-base status at delivery. In 180 women, ph values from both the umbilical artery and vein were obtained following delivery. A significant inverse correlation between umbilical vein ph and maternal heamatocrit was obtained (r=-0.28, p=0.001). R squared (the proportion of variance explained by the haematocrit) was 8%. There was a similar relation between umbilical artery pH and maternal heamatocrit (r=-0.23, p=0.001). The umbilical artery ph was ≥=1SD below the mean in 25 of the 48 women who had haematocrit values ≥=40%. The observed relation between maternal haematocrit and cord pH possibly reflects the fact that adequate plasma volume expansion is the hallmark of successful pregnancy. Where such change has been suboptimal, the resulting high haematocrit may be therefore merely an indicator of a poor quality pregnancy. Although a high maternal haematocrit (>40%) ...
