The urban development of Nafpaktos (15th-19th c.)

Abstract

Nafpaktos (Lepanto or Inebahti) is one of the historic cities in the eastern Mediterranean. The city had a key role during the Medieval and Early Modern Period due to its strategic location. However, despite its importance, the architecture and urban planning of the city has not been systematically studied. Therefore, this PhD thesis studies the architecture and urban planning of Nafpaktos, from the 15th to the 19th century, inevitably covering a large part of the 20th century. The research assumed that the historical, social, and economic reality of a city reflects on its architecture and urban planning and thus, for the study of the urban development of a city, the in-depth understanding and interpretation of its historical and socio-economic context is a prerequisite.
