This PhD Thesis is the first to deal with the field of retail trade and in particular the field of food - supermarkets. As well as aiming not only to analyze how important corporate efforts can affect the size of macroeconomic parameters, it also to quantify the contribution of the firms-sample to the national domestic product, both individually and collectively. This, in fact, is the novelty of this thesis that comes to fill the important scientific gap abovementioned (Zisoudis Ν. et al 2021). In particular, the paper studies the financial performance of the most important supermarket chains in Greece and in what extent they influence certain microeconomic variables including: the employment rate, national income, investments, etc. those, name related with the economic development of the country, in the unstable socio-economic environment that it has faced in the past 12 years. The time period under consideration in this thesis begins in 2009 with the beginning of the financial crisis and ends in 2021, two years after the beginning of the COVID - 19 health crisis. On the other hand, the period of the COVID-19 pandemic began as a health crisis and with the cessation of financial activities, it also turned into an economic crisis having the same characteristics as the previous one. The choice of the organized food retail sector was made mainly because the results in this sector are considered indicative of the prosperity index and wealth of a country, but at the same time the sector is also significantly affected by the climate of insecurity, fear and uncertainty that develops in such periods. The methodology followed in the research took into consideration on the one hand primary empirical data from quantitative and qualitative research done, such as structured questionnaires and interviews submitted to consumers, company executives as well as employees. On the other hand, this thesis was based also on secondary sources, such as financial statements, balance sheets, data from the Hellenic Statistical Authority, the Consumer Goods Retail Research Institute, Eurostat, Nielsen and other relevant literature, etc. The findings of the study showed that during the economic crisis were presented significant financial loses in a number of supermarket chains, some of which did not manage to survive. At the same time, however, we also had laudable achievements from some others. However, also in the period of the pandemic, despite the unprecedented situations the sector faced, it was able to cope with them and also additional new rules imposed by the health legislation as well as the new and emerging needs and demands of consumers. The present research is pioneering because it concludes that in times of crisis not only bright examples of businesses exist that with sound management and correct strategic steps can survive and evolve, but at the same time they can participate and contribute to the stability and development of the socio-economic fabric of the country, as well as to the development and stability of the majority of its population.
