Hippocrates’ On Regimen, Book II: a commentary

Abstract

The Hippocratic text On Regimen is one of the most interesting texts of the Hippocratic Collection, to which international research has recently turned its attention. Despite the fact that it is a work of varied and complex content, there are only a few relevant studies in the international literature, which focus mainly on the first and fourth books of the work. This thesis aims to provide a detailed interpretive commentary on the second book of On Regimen, in which the author provides an extensive list of foods and beverages, and discusses the dietary influence of physical exercises as well as other dietary practices on health and its maintenance, suggesting means for prevention of illness. At the same time, the Introduction of the thesis aims to elaborate on the theoretical background which serves as a foundation for fully understanding the ancient text, focusing on the original relationship that governs the body and soul according to the author of On Regimen.
