Literary geography: representations of Lesvos in Stratis Myrivilis' novels

Abstract

Literary Geography has various methods in order to analyse the representation of space in literature, such as the Geocritical method, aiming of highlighting spatial relationships and aspects of the literary work that are not so obvious during reading. One other method of Literary Geography is Literary Cartography i.e making maps that depict the represented space by examining the relationship between real and fictional spaces. This doctoral thesis refers to the field of Literary Geography, in the context of which the Geocritical method is applied, as systematized by Bertrand Westphal in 2007, and in addition, a cartographic depiction is attempted, in two novels written by Stratis Myrivilis, "Vasilis Arvanitis" and "The Mermaid Madonna", the plots of which are placed to the settlements, Mouria and Skala Mourias, in North Lesvos.
