Archive records of sub-trials and convicts of Gyaros prison (1947-1952): creation of a digital database: demographic and historical analysis

Abstract

The purpose of the PhD thesis at hand has been the preservation, statistical analysis and overall utilization of the inmates records of the Gyaros Penal Detainment Facilities during the period 1947-1952. The prison records is comprised of 42 volumes which contain a plethora of personal and legal information concerning the inmates, during the Greek Civil War as well as the postwar three year period. The number of people recorded in the original material sums up to almost 17.000 individuals. Sixty per cent (60%) of that material was statistically processed and led to the drawing of political, sociological and historical conclusions. In particular the statistical approach of this work revealed some purely demographical data of the prisoners such as their age spectrum, their family status, their places of birth, their religion etc. At the same time, it depicts the social-economical features such as their educational level and profession.
