Migrant integration at the regional level in the rural areas of Southern Europe: a comparative analysis of the cases of Albanians in Crete (Greece) and Moroccans in Sardinia (Italy)
Abstract
International migration to rural areas of Southern Europe has been an important process since the 1990s and continues to have a significant demographic and economic impact on these areas. Many migrants have settled there for more than two decades now, but we know relatively little about their experiences, perceptions, needs, living conditions and aspirations. This empirical, interdisciplinary and comparative research aims to examine the impact of the place of living on the integration and perceived well-being of migrants living in rural areas of Southern Europe, with a special focus on those of Crete and Sardinia. The thesis explores spatial trends and patterns regarding the socio-economic integration of Albanians and Moroccans living in the rural areas of Crete and Sardinia, respectively, by examining these in relation to the urban ones of each region.
