The preachers of the idea of the nation: veterans and war victims in Greece: (1912–1940)

Abstract

In the aftermath of First World War the millions of veterans and war victims formed a new and numerous social category in all belligerents, among of which was also Greece. War veterans was a pillar of social history of the Interwar period, however, their history is a neglected subject in Greek historiography. The Ph.D. thesis deals with Greek veterans during the period 1912–1940 and focuses mainly on i) the welfare system which created for the ex-servicemen, ii) the veterans’ organizations, iii) the international context. Furthermore, it examines Greek ex-servicemen’s international contacts and their participation in international veterans’ organizations (Veterans’ International, FIDAC, CIAMAC, CIP), as well as their position in the formation and conservation of the war memory. These dimensions provide us a deep illustration of veterans’ opinions, political affiliations and mentalities, as well as the perceptions of the State and the society for them.
