The newspaper Kathimerini in metapolitefsi, 1974-1993: historical and comparative study of greek liberalism
Abstract
This thesis narrates the ideological development of Greek Liberalism in post-74 Greece through the publications of the newspaper ''Kathimerini'', from 1974 to 1993. It is a study through the prism of ideological convergence between Right and Left: the pillars of this convergence, democracy, europeanism and the free market policies aiming at incessant economic growth, are historicised and studied in time. The thesis is based on the anti-naturalist, hermeneutic tradition. The first part ( 1974-1981 ) covers the ascendancy of Kathimerini's liberal egalitarianism which culminated in the rejection of the growth imperative. The second part ( 1981-1985 ) presents the short-lived alignment of Kathimerini with the wider Greek Right as well as the newspaper's rejection of neoliberalism. The third part ( 1985-1993) narrates the establishment of the convergence with the Left through the domination of a growthist version of Liberalism that rejected both egalitarian and neoliberal ideas.
